Script - Too Fast! Too S-l-o-w! Change the playback speed on iOS YouTube, Stitcher, Podcasts, Audible
Hi, everyone! This is Lara Hammock from the Marble Jar channel and in today’s video I’ll show you how to slow things down or speed things up on your favorite iOS listening app.
Sometimes I’m listening to a YouTube video and they are talking so fast that I can’t keep up! Or more frequently, I’m listening to a book on tape and the narrator’s vocal pacing is so slow and dramatic that it is absolutely driving me crazy.
Here is the good news! Most non-music listening apps have anticipated that you might want to control the speed of playback and have built this into their controls. I’m just going to show you how to change the speed on some of the main apps that I use. First,
YouTube
I have a tendency to speak kind of quickly on these videos. But if you listen to some of my early videos, like my trailer, I speak much more slowly. They drive me nuts now and I would have to speed them up to make them tolerable to listen to! Here’s how to do it: after you have begun watching a video, tap on the three dots in the upper right hand corner, and choose playback speed. .75x is a little slower than normal, 1.25x is a little faster than normal. Despite the fact that this looks like an individual video setting, it is actually a universal setting, so you may need to adjust it back to normal for the next video. Next,
Audible
Audible is Amazon’s audiobook app. I use this setting all the time on Audible since many professional narrators speak a little slowly for my taste. Changing the playback speed is really obvious in Audible. Once you are playing a book, speed is one of the settings you can control right from the main panel. Hit 1.0x speed and change is to whatever you want. Their settings reflect their audience preferences, there are many more options to speed up playback rather than slow it down.
Stitcher
Stitcher is my new favorite podcast app. I just did a video on why I like it so much, but this is one of the many settings that they allow you to manipulate. On an iPad changing the speed is pretty obvious. Once you start a podcast episode, you can see all of the playback controls up at the top of the app, hit where it says 1x and it’ll scroll through 1.25x, 1.5x, 2x, 1/2x and back to normal speed. It’s a little harder to find on the iPhone app. When you are listening to a podcast, make sure you are in the full playback screen mode, and then scroll up a bit to reveal more options. Then same as on the iPad, you can scroll through all of the speed options. Again -- this is a universal setting, so you’ll need to adjust it for your next podcast. And finally, many people use
Apple's Podcast App
You can change this setting much the way Stitcher allows you to -- from the podcast playback screen, just hit 1x to scroll through the speed options.
That's it! Let me know what you think. Comments are always appreciated and thanks for watching!
